The effects of active learning approach in teaching and learning science: A case of one of the primary schools in Bhutan. Karma Dema & Tshering

The quantitative research was designed to study the effects of active learning approach on learning achievement of 5th grade students and explore their perceptions towards the use of active learning approach in learning Science. The population of the study comprised of 59 students of 5th grade who were studying in one of the primary schools in Bhutan. A cluster random sampling method was adopted to select 29 students of mixed ability and gender. The sample group was treated with active learning approach. The study was carried out for four weeks. Tests and questionnaire were used to collect the data. Pretest and posttest were conducted before and after the experiment to find the learning achievement of the students in science. Questionnaire was administered after the intervention. The data were analyzed and interpreted using inferential statistics t-test with p<0.05 level of significance, mean, and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that incorporating active learning approach in science enhanced the learning achievement of 5th grade students. It was also found that students have positive view points towards active learning approach that was incorporated in teaching and learning science.
